LAKEWOOD PUBLIC SCHOOL'S 6th GRADERS TO STAY IN GRADE SCHOOL ONE MORE YEAR

Like Peter Pan, who didn't want to grow up, Lakewood Public School's 6th graders aren't ready to become big Middle Schoolers just yet, the School District Administration has apparently decided.

Currently, public school students through 5th grade attend grade school at Ella G. Clarke School, Clifton Avenue Grade School, or Oak Street School. School hours at these locations are 7:45am to 2:15 pm.

From 6th grade through 8th grade, all students attend Middle School. School hours at that location is 7:00am to 1:30pm.

At their next regular meeting on Wednesday night, March 22, the Lakewood Board of Education is set to adopt a recommendation from the School District's Superintendent Laura Winters to keep all 6th graders in the grade schools, and to move to Middle School only in 7th grade.

This will keep the 6th grade with the younger students and allow them to stay on the younger grade schedule for one more year.

"This grade reconfiguration allows for improved instructional experiences and greater alignment of resources and practices, while giving rising 6th grade students an additional year in Elementary School," plan documents state.

6th Grade Students will be permitted to participate in Middle School Sports.

Staff will be distributed based on their current teaching assignment. Current Sixth grade teachers will teacher sixth grade during the 2023-2024 school year.

Additionally, the Board is set to approve a reconfiguration of their preschool locations.

Currently, kindergarten, preschool, and 1st grade students attend either Piner Elementary School or Spruce Street School.

Under the reconfiguration, Piner Elementary School will be only for kindergarten and preschool students, and Spruce Street School will be only for 1st grade students.

There will be no time change to the current schedule at either location which is 8:30am to 3:00pm.

Staff will be distributed based on their current teaching assignment. Current Kindergarten teachers will teach kindergarten during the 2023-2024 school year. Current First grade teachers will teach first grade during the 2023-2024 school year.
