LAKEWOOD TOWNSHIP'S MUNICIPAL OFFICES TO BE CLOSED FRIDAY AS TOWNSHIP WILL BEGIN TO ANNUALLY OBSERVE JUNETEENTH

Lakewood Township's municipal offices which are vastly "open to the public" by telephone only, will be closed this Friday, June 17.

The reason: Lakewood's Township Committee is set today to formalize a plan to begin to annually observe Juneteenth as a paid holiday for all Township employees.

Juneteenth commemorates June 19, 1865, when Union General Gordon Granger rode into Galveston, Texas to inform enslaved people of the 1863 Emancipation Proclamation and their freedom.

On September 10, 2020, Governor Phil Murphy signed into law S19 which designates the third Friday in June as a State and Public holiday, known as Juneteenth Day.

On June 17, 2021, President Biden signed Pub. L. 117–17, recognizing June 19th, known as Juneteenth National Independence Day as a federal holiday.

After 2 years, Lakewood Township has finally caught up.

At their monthly meeting later today, the Township Committee is expected to formally revise the Township's holiday schedule, to recognize Juneteenth as an annual paid holiday for all employees.
