THURSDAY: THANKSGIVING DAY - GOVERNMENT OFFICES ARE CLOSED




Today, Thursday, November 23, coincides with Thanksgiving Day 2023, a state and federal holiday.


It is an annual national holiday that has religious and secular aspects, being coined as the “harvest festival” and the “festival of family.”


The first Thanksgiving supposedly took place in Plymouth, Massachusetts in 1621. It’s celebrated on the fourth Thursday of November.


Township offices will be closed. In Lakewood, there will be no bulk pickup this week.


All New Jersey state offices, including courts and Motor Vehicle Commission offices will be closed.


United States Postal Service offices will be closed. There will be no mail delivered. FedEx and UPS will deliver only FedEx Custom Critical and UPS Express Critical.


The vast majority of banks will be closed.


Most of the malls in New Jersey, including Jackson Premium Outlets, Jersey Shore Premium Outlets, Ocean County Mall, and American Dream Mall will be closed.


BJ’s Wholesale Club, Costco, Target, and Walmart are closed.


Stop & Shop, ShopRite, Dollar Tree, Family Dollar, and Dollar General will be open but with reduced hours.


NJ Transit will add extra trains and buses in the morning and early afternoon hours to accommodate passengers traveling to and from the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day parade in New York City. For NJ Transit, riders should use NJ Transit’s online trip planner to double-check arrival and departure times.


PATH will operate on a Saturday schedule while SEPTA will operate on a Sunday schedule.


The New York Stock Exchange, Nasdaq trading, and bond markets will be closed.


The next federal holiday is Christmas Day on Monday, December 25.
