EARLIER REPORTS OF A SHABBOS SHOWDOWN IN TRENTON FOR AVI SCHNALL AS BUDGET DEADLINE LOOMS EXPOSES CRACKS IN ALL HIS CAMPAIGN PROMISES!

July 1, which will fall on this coming Monday, is the annual deadline for passing the New Jersey state budget.

Getting the budget passed is an annual "episode" of Trenton politics and it typically doesn't happen until the very last day.

For this year, the budget is expected to be approved on Friday, leaving Governor Murphy just hours to sign it into law (or else there will be a government shutdown).

However, as of just days ago it appeared that no deal would occur before Shabbos, which would force the Legislature to remain in session on Shabbos.

It should be no big deal for the two Orthodox Jewish members of the Assembly, Avi Schnall and Gary Schaer to skip a Shabbos session as either way the Democratic party controls the Legislature so the budget will pass overwhelmingly even without them.

However, Tachlis Daily reported on "the likelihood that both assemblymen may have to spend Shabbos in Trenton this week."

The report adds that legislative rules allow a staffer to be designated to press the voting button for any legislator who is physically present in the building but unable to do so themselves due to religious observances so they would be able to observe Shabbos without compromising their responsibilities as legislators.

Hm... this sure sounds odd.

Why would Avi Schnall be bound to spend Shabbos in Trenton simply to vote on a budget?

Weren't we assured during the elections that the vote was "for the individual, not the party," and that Rabbi Schnall was going to Trenton simply to advocate for tuition relief and safer streets in Lakewood, and that "they know" that he will not need to vote for their agenda?

And there are reports that the Agudah representative Schor will also be spending Shabbos in Trenton.
