Jackson Township voters are tasked with choosing 3 candidates (from among 6) for the Township Council.
One candidate is Nino A. Borrelli who currently sits on the Council and is seeking reelection. Borrelli is strongly supported by Jackson Community Council.
Borrelli has an interesting history - and has been called out by Lakewood Alerts.
In January 2023, Borrelli voted against the establishment of Mayor Mike Reina's heavily touted Open Space Committee, saying that he "disliked giving the mayor full authority to appoint a majority of members of the Committee, and that, as "the elected representatives" the whole Council should have more say in who is appointed to this Committee."
In June 2023, then-Council President Martin Flemming abruptly announced that he is stepping down from his post as Council President. Flemming, Stephen Chisholm, and Borrelli then worked in tandem to get Borrelli appointed to take over the Council President position.
Councilwoman Jennifer Kuhn called it "getting blindsided."
A mere few weeks later, the new Council President was AWOL as the Zoning Board canceled a meeting due to lack of a quorum. Borrelli was also AWOL as Flemming and Chisolm bickered with Kuhn and Sargent over appointments to the Board.
In the general elections, the Board of Education placed a referendum on the ballot asking voters to accept a $4,035,000 tax increase for the public schools. At a council meeting, Borrelli stated he is "personally opposed to the proposed tax increase."
Lakewood Alerts and Jersey Shore Online published articles blasting Borrelli for not supporting the tax hike. Ultimately the voters spoke and loud clear in opposition to the tax hike.
In October 2023, Flemming completely stepped down, creating a vacancy. On November 9, 2023, Kuhn, Sargent and Reina voted to appoint Mordy Burnstein to fill the unexpired term. Borrelli voted against Burnstein. He also refused to congratulate Burnstein when the rest of the Council shared their congratulatory wishes.
In December 2023, the Council adopted the "DOJ settlement ordinance" which permits schools and dormitories in many more locations. Borrelli voted against the ordinances, citing overdevelopment concerns" and highlighting that "these ordinances go above and beyond what the litigation settlement requires of us."
At the council's annual reorganization meeting in January 2024, Borrelli voted against both Kuhn and Sargent's appointments as president and vice president, respectively.
Weeks later, Borrelli strongly opposed Reina's creation of a new Public Safety Director safety position.
Has the Jackson Community Council forgotten all of this? Why are they suddenly strongly supporting Borrelli's reelection campaign??
Is something more going on here? Who promised who what?
