FIRST REPORT: WITH NO DIRECTION FROM LOCAL ASKANIM, TOMS RIVER AGAIN VOTES TO CURB OVER-DEVELOPMENT

After receiving no direction from local community askanim for whom to vote, the voters of Toms River once again spoke all on their very own.

Loud and clear.

In support of curbing unabated over-development which leads to increased taxes.

Toms River Ward 2 voters came out strongly in support of Republican William Byrne, bringing him to victory to fill the one-year unexpired term of the seat formerly held by Mayor Dan Rodrick.

When Rodrick became mayor, George Lobman was appointed to fill his vacant council seat. Lobman vacated the seat with a one-year unexpired term, thus the need for this election.

Out of 20,174 registered voters in Ward 2, a total of 13,023 votes were cast; Byrne received 8,330 (63.89%) while Democrat Zach Dougherty received 4,693 (35.99%).

Byrne ran on a strong platform of keeping taxes down and fighting overdevelopment.

“I believe my position on taxes and development is more in line with the voters of Toms River than that of the previous mayor and council. Residents were tired of their pro-development policies and big giveaways to developers. Particularly when they gave away a $3.5M waterfront property to a developer for just one dollar to build two apartment towers downtown. They also exempted the developer from school taxes for 30 years. I would never vote for a policy like that,” he told The Toms River Times.

For this year's general election, the TRJCC chose not to endorse any party. All on their own, Toms River residents spoke loud and clear in support of this platform.
