As first reported in the Asbury Park Press, MB Vineyards, which operates a discount liquor store on Avenue J in Brooklyn, has just purchased a liquor distribution license in Toms River for a record-breaking $1.6 million.
The Township Council awarded the license to MB Vineyards on Wednesday.
Consumption licenses allow alcohol to be consumed on a licensed premise, while distribution licenses allow alcohol to be sold for consumption elsewhere.
Township officials said they did not know where MB Vineyards plans to use the distribution license.
The license is a new one; the township was allowed to sell one new distribution license and two new consumption licenses after Toms River's population increased in the 2020 U.S. Census.
New Jersey towns can issue one new liquor license to a bar or restaurant for every 3,000 people in a municipality; Toms River's population grew to over 95,000 in the last census.
Toms River has 52 existing liquor licenses, including 29 consumption licenses, 11 distribution licenses, eight club licenses and four licenses used at hotels and motels, according to Township Clerk Mike Cruglio.
